CLONMEL CASTLE

OJOA Fall Tour

On Sunday October 15, 2017 fourty brave souls battled gusty winds, cloudy skies and a few drizzles of rain on our journey through the roads of Southwestern Ontario to reach our ultimate distination, Port Dover's Clonmel Castle.

After a fortifying cup of coffee at the Cambridge OnRoute Tim Hortons we began our journey with a visit to Bill Lindsay at his home in Selkirk. Bill's private collection of items from his Home Hardware business, as well as pieces of machinery & tools were extremely interesting.

With a tight schedule in mind we said Thank You and a hardy goodbye to Bill and headed off. The second part of our drive followed a scenic route that boasted beautiful homes and trees with colourful leaves on one side and the rolling waves of Lake Erie on the other.

As we made our way into Port Dover, I noticed that although Friday the 13th was just two days prior, there was not a biker in sight. Dreams of "Hogs" & "Cats" cruising Main Street went bust but as a reward, when arrived at Clonmel Castle, we were provided with a High Tea that even the Queen would have approved of. While we enjoyed the scones & clotted cream, finger sandwiches, pastries and countless other tasty morsels, the owner Lynnee gave us the history of the Castle and then we were encouraged to wonder freely through the historic building.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the final drive for 2017, especially Anita & Jim McGrath who arranged for us to tour Bill's collection, as well as a special mention to Josephine who was elegant in her hat, Carol who was tres chic in her facinator and Steve who was debonair in his bowler hat.
